Fine Lines & Wrinkles: What Can You Do About Them?

6 min read

You smile and suddenly there are little lines around your eyes. You raise your eyebrows and your forehead folds. Then one day, you look in the mirror when your face is completely relaxed and realise some of those lines have decided to stick around.

Fine lines and wrinkles are a normal part of getting older, but that doesn't mean you have to love every change you see.

The interesting thing is that wrinkles don't all develop for the same reason. Some are created mainly by repeated facial movement. Others become more noticeable as collagen declines and the skin becomes thinner, drier or less resilient. Sun exposure, genetics and lifestyle can influence the picture too.

That means the question isn't simply, "What's the best treatment for wrinkles?" A better question is: What is causing your lines, and what do you actually want to improve?

At Aura Aesthetics, that's where we start.

Why Am I Suddenly Getting More Fine Lines?

It can sometimes feel as though wrinkles appear overnight, but what's happening beneath the skin has usually been developing for much longer. When we're younger, the skin contains plenty of collagen and elastin, helping it feel firm, flexible and able to bounce back after facial movement.

As we age, collagen and elastin gradually decline. The skin becomes less resilient, and the repeated movements you've made thousands of times while smiling, laughing, squinting and frowning can begin to leave more permanent marks.

You might start noticing:

  • Forehead lines

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows

  • Crow's feet

  • Smile lines

  • Fine lines around the mouth

  • Lines that remain when your face is relaxed

  • Changes in skin texture and firmness

Sun exposure can accelerate these changes because UV radiation contributes to the breakdown of collagen and other supporting structures within the skin. This is one reason areas such as the face often show visible signs of aging earlier than areas that have spent more time covered.

What's the Difference Between Dynamic and Static Wrinkles?

This distinction is important because it can help determine which treatment approach makes the most sense.

Dynamic wrinkles appear when you move your face. Think about the horizontal lines that appear when you lift your eyebrows, the "11s" that form when you frown, or the crow's feet you see when you smile.

Over time, some of these lines can become visible even when your face is resting. These are often referred to as static wrinkles. Static lines may also be influenced by changes in collagen, skin quality, sun damage and the natural aging process.

This is why treating every wrinkle in exactly the same way doesn't make much sense. A line caused predominantly by muscle movement may need a very different approach from fine crepey lines associated with declining collagen and changes in skin texture.

Is Botox® the Best Treatment for Wrinkles?

Botox® can be particularly useful for dynamic expression lines.

It works by temporarily reducing the activity of selected facial muscles responsible for creating certain wrinkles. Common treatment areas include forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet. But there is an important distinction here. The aim isn't necessarily to stop your face from moving.

At Aura, we're interested in softening the movements that are creating unwanted lines while keeping your overall appearance natural and expressive. How much treatment is appropriate depends on your facial anatomy, muscle movement and the result you're hoping to achieve. And Botox isn't the answer to every wrinkle.

If your main concern is fine lines associated with texture, sun damage or declining skin quality, we may need to look at the skin itself.

What If My Lines Are There Even When I'm Not Moving My Face?

This is where collagen-focused and resurfacing treatments can become more relevant. If you can see lines while your face is completely relaxed, muscle movement may only be one part of the picture. The skin itself may have become thinner or less resilient, or years of sun exposure may have contributed to changes in texture and collagen.

Depending on what we see during your consultation, treatments such as laser resurfacing, microneedling or chemical peels may be considered. Rather than simply relaxing the muscles beneath the skin, these approaches focus more directly on skin quality.

Can Laser Resurfacing Help Fine Lines?

Laser skin resurfacing can be used when fine lines are accompanied by concerns such as rough texture or visible signs of sun damage. The treatment creates controlled renewal within the skin, supporting the processes involved in producing healthier-looking skin and remodeling collagen. This can make it particularly useful for someone who isn't looking to address one isolated expression line, but instead feels that their complexion generally looks less smooth or refreshed than it once did.

The type and intensity of laser treatment required will depend on your skin, your concerns and how much downtime you're comfortable with.

What Does Microneedling Do for Wrinkles?

Microneedling takes a different approach. Rather than targeting facial muscles, it creates tiny controlled microchannels within the skin. This stimulates the skin's natural repair response and encourages new collagen production.

Over time, this can help improve:

  • Fine lines

  • Uneven texture

  • Skin firmness

  • Overall skin quality

Microneedling may be particularly useful when the goal is broader skin rejuvenation rather than treating one specific wrinkle. And because collagen remodeling takes time, improvements develop gradually rather than appearing overnight.

Can Chemical Peels Improve Fine Lines?

Chemical peels may be another option when fine lines sit alongside concerns such as dullness, uneven tone or rough texture. A carefully selected peel exfoliates the outer layers of the skin and encourages fresher-looking skin to come through.

Different peels work at different depths, so this isn't a one-size-fits-all treatment. The right option depends on your skin type, your concerns and the level of correction you're looking for. For some patients, a peel may form part of a broader skin maintenance plan rather than being used as a standalone "wrinkle treatment."

Do I Need More Than One Treatment?

Imagine you have forehead lines caused by repeated muscle movement, but you've also noticed fine lines, rougher texture and sun damage across your complexion. Botox may help with the movement creating the forehead lines, but it isn't designed to resurface the skin.

Likewise, microneedling or laser resurfacing may help improve skin quality and collagen, but they don't work in the same way as Botox on strong expression lines.

A combination approach can therefore make sense when several different changes are contributing to what you see in the mirror. That doesn't mean doing everything at once. At Aura Aesthetics, we look at your facial movement, skin quality, collagen changes and the areas that actually bother you before deciding what, if anything, should be treated.

Can I Prevent Wrinkles From Getting Worse?

We can't stop skin aging completely, and we wouldn't want to pretend otherwise. But looking after your skin can help reduce some of the external factors that contribute to premature aging.

Daily sun protection is particularly important because repeated UV exposure contributes to collagen breakdown and visible photoaging. A consistent skincare routine, avoiding smoking and looking after your general health can also support the skin over time.

Professional treatments can then be used selectively when there are specific changes you'd like to address.

FAQs About Fine Lines and Wrinkles

At What Age Should I Start Treating Fine Lines?

There isn't a particular age when you "should" start treatment. Some people notice expression lines relatively early, while others don't feel bothered by wrinkles until much later. Treatment should be based on what you're noticing, what concerns you and whether there's an appropriate option for your skin.

Will Botox Make My Face Look Frozen?

Botox doesn't have to remove all facial movement. Treatment can be planned to soften specific expression lines while preserving natural movement and expression. The amount used and the muscles treated are important to achieving a balanced result.

What Is the Best Treatment for Fine Lines Around the Eyes?

It depends on what's creating them. Crow's feet caused predominantly by smiling or squinting may respond to Botox, while finer textural lines may require an approach focused more on skin quality and collagen. Sometimes both factors are present.

How Long Does It Take to Improve Fine Lines?

That depends on the treatment. Botox works differently from treatments that rely on collagen remodeling, such as microneedling or laser resurfacing. During your consultation, we'll explain the expected timeline for the treatment recommended for you.

Can Wrinkles Be Completely Removed?

The aim of treatment is generally to soften lines and improve the overall appearance of the skin rather than promise perfectly wrinkle-free skin. Your anatomy, skin quality, type of wrinkle and treatment choice will all influence what can realistically be achieved.

Let's Work Out What Your Skin Actually Needs

Maybe it's the forehead line you keep noticing in photographs. Perhaps it's the fine creasing around your eyes, or you're simply feeling that your skin doesn't look quite as smooth and refreshed as it used to.

You don't need to diagnose the problem yourself or decide which treatment you need before you come in.

At Aura Aesthetics, we'll look at how your face moves, the quality of your skin and the lines that are bothering you. From there, we can create a personalized treatment plan that may include Botox, laser resurfacing, microneedling, chemical peels or a combination suited to your skin.

Because the goal isn't to erase every sign that you've smiled, laughed or lived. It's to help you feel refreshed while still looking unmistakably like yourself.

Book your consultation with Aura Aesthetics and let's find the right approach for your skin.
