Microneedling: Why Fall Is a Great Time to Invest in Your Skin
Summer can be great for us, but not always quite so kind to our skin. By the time fall arrives in Portland, you might look in the mirror and think, when did my skin start feeling this rough? Maybe your pores seem more noticeable, old acne scars are catching the light differently, or those fine lines you barely thought about earlier in the year suddenly seem a little more obvious.
This is exactly the kind of conversation we have with patients at Aura Aesthetics. Sometimes you do not need another serum or a facial that gives you a nice glow for the weekend. You want to actually work on the texture, scarring or changes in skin quality that have been bothering you.
That is where microneedling can come in. And if fall already has you thinking ahead to holiday plans, the timing works rather nicely too, with October microneedling appointments including a complimentary CO2 Lip Pro Mask.
How Does Microneedling Work?
The idea of deliberately creating tiny injuries in your skin can sound a little strange when you first hear it, but that controlled response is exactly the point.
A medical-grade microneedling device uses very fine needles to create precise microchannels in the skin. Your skin responds by beginning its natural repair process, including the production of new collagen and elastin.
Rather than simply polishing the surface, we are encouraging your skin to do some of the work itself. Over the following weeks, that remodeling process can help the complexion feel smoother and firmer while softening the appearance of fine lines, enlarged-looking pores and certain types of scarring.
You may notice some early freshness once the initial redness has settled, but this is not really an overnight-glow treatment. The more interesting changes happen gradually, with results typically becoming more noticeable around four to six weeks later.
What Can Microneedling Help With?
We commonly consider microneedling for concerns including:
Acne scars
Enlarged-looking pores
Rough or uneven texture
Fine lines and wrinkles
Mild skin laxity
Sun-damaged skin
Certain scars and stretch marks
But we are much more interested in what your skin looks like than ticking boxes on a treatment menu.
If you have slightly rough texture and pores that seem more obvious than they used to, your treatment plan may be fairly straightforward. If you are dealing with deeper acne scars, laxity or several concerns at once, we may want to approach things differently.
That is why we look at your skin first and choose the treatment second.
Can Microneedling Really Help Acne Scars?
The frustrating thing about acne is that sometimes the breakouts clear, but they leave a little reminder behind. When inflammation damages the skin, collagen does not always rebuild evenly, which can leave dips, depressions and uneven texture long after the acne itself has settled.
Microneedling essentially gives the skin a reason to start repairing again. By creating tiny, controlled microchannels, we encourage a fresh healing response and new collagen production, which can gradually soften certain indented scars and help the skin look smoother.
The key word here is gradually. Deeper or more established scars are unlikely to disappear after one appointment, and we would much rather be realistic with you about that. Sometimes a series of treatments makes sense, while more significant scarring may need a different or more intensive approach.
We also pay attention to what your skin is doing right now. If you are still experiencing angry, inflamed breakouts, we may want to calm those down before turning our attention to the scars. There can be plenty of reasons your skin keeps breaking out despite good skincare, so we would rather work out what is happening first than rush straight in with the microneedling pen.
Traditional Microneedling or VirtueRF: What’s the Difference?
Both treatments are designed to stimulate collagen, but that does not mean you automatically need the more intensive option.
If texture, visible pores, fine lines or milder acne scarring are bothering you, traditional microneedling may be exactly what your skin needs. VirtueRF Microneedling adds radiofrequency energy into the mix, which can be useful when we are looking at more established scarring, texture or skin laxity.
You do not need to figure out which one is right before you come in. We will look at your skin, talk about what you would actually like to improve and take it from there. Sometimes traditional microneedling is more than enough, and sometimes that extra RF energy is worth bringing in.

Can Anything Be Added to Microneedling?
Yes, and this is where we can really tailor microneedling to what your skin is asking for.
We can incorporate Factor Five Growth Factors to support the skin as it renews, while Microneedling + PDRN combines microneedling with V-TECH EXOSOMES infused with PDRN. This may be something we consider when hydration, redness, texture or overall skin quality could use a little extra attention.
Then there is Microneedling + PRP, which uses platelet-rich plasma prepared from a small sample of your own blood. PRP contains naturally occurring platelets and growth factors that can be incorporated into treatment to support the regenerative process.
Sound like a lot of options? Don’t worry, there is absolutely no homework required before your appointment. Tell us what has been bothering you, whether that is old acne scars, rough texture, redness or skin that just does not feel quite as healthy as it used to, and we can talk you through what is worth adding, if anything. Sometimes keeping it simple is exactly what your skin needs.
What If My Skin Has More Than One Concern?
Honestly, whose doesn't? You may be looking at rough texture and larger-looking pores but also have a few sun spots, some lingering redness or old acne marks that make your complexion look less even. That does not mean we need to throw every treatment at your skin.
Microneedling is particularly useful when texture, scarring, pores and overall skin quality are high on the list. If congestion is also part of the picture, a HydraFacial may have a place in your wider plan, while pigmentation or vascular redness may need a different approach.
The same applies if what you really want is that smooth, luminous “glass skin” look. Healthy-looking skin is rarely about one thing. Hydration, texture, pigmentation and redness all influence how fresh and even your complexion appears, so sometimes microneedling is a big part of the answer and sometimes your skin needs something else alongside it.
What Is Microneedling Recovery Really Like?
Immediately afterwards, expect your skin to look pink or red and possibly feel warm or slightly tight. Redness typically settles within a day or two, and you may notice a little dryness or flaking over the next few days.
This is not the time to decide your skin needs a scrub. Keep things simple, follow your microneedling aftercare, be diligent with sun protection and give stronger active skincare a break until your skin is ready for it again.
And remember, just because your skin looks normal again does not mean the treatment has finished doing its thing. Collagen remodeling continues beneath the surface, which is why we give the skin time before deciding what it needs next.
Why Do We Like Microneedling in the Fall?
There is something about fall that makes us all take stock after summer. Maybe your routine slipped while you were traveling, sunscreen and heat left you feeling more congested, or the end of summer has suddenly made pigmentation, fine lines and uneven texture more noticeable.
It is also a nice time to work on your skin without the pressure of trying to look different by next weekend. There is still time before the holiday season for redness to settle and for those gradual microneedling results to start developing.
And for October, we are giving the lips a little attention too. Microneedling appointments include a complimentary CO2 Lip Pro Mask, so while we are working on the rest of your skin, an area that is very easy to overlook gets some love as well.
Microneedling FAQs
Does Microneedling Hurt?
We generally apply topical numbing beforehand to make treatment more comfortable. You may still notice some pressure or a prickling sensation, particularly around more sensitive areas, but most patients find it very manageable.
Can I Wear Makeup After Microneedling?
Your freshly treated skin needs a little breathing room. Follow the instructions we give you after your appointment before reaching for makeup again, and keep your routine simple while those initial signs of treatment settle.
Can I Have Microneedling Before an Event?
Yes, but please do not book your first-ever session two days before the holiday party.
We like a little breathing room because redness can be followed by mild dryness or flaking, and the results themselves take several weeks to develop. If there is an important date in your calendar, tell us and we can help you work backwards.
Can Microneedling Make My Pores Disappear?
No, and we would never promise you poreless skin. Pores are completely normal.
What microneedling can do is improve the quality and texture of the surrounding skin, which may make enlarged-looking pores less noticeable and help the complexion look smoother overall.
Is Microneedling Only for the Face?
Not at all. We can also consider microneedling for appropriate areas of the body, particularly when concerns such as scars, stretch marks or uneven texture are involved. As always, we would look at the area first and decide whether microneedling is actually the right tool for the job.
Wondering If Microneedling Is Worth It for Your Skin?
You do not need to diagnose your own skin or arrive knowing whether you need traditional microneedling, VirtueRF, PRP or PDRN.
If summer has left your complexion feeling rougher, looking less even or making you notice scars, pores or fine lines a little more, book a consultation so you can show us what you mean. At Aura Aesthetics, we can look at your skin properly, talk about what you would genuinely like to change and build a plan from there.
If microneedling makes sense, great. If your skin would benefit more from something else, we will tell you that too. That is the whole point of making the treatment fit your skin, rather than trying to make your skin fit the treatment.
